BuildSkills Australia has released new research examining how Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) are changing the skills and workforce requirements of Australia’s construction industry.
The research points to an evolution in construction skills rather than the replacement of the existing workforce, as greater use is made of prefabrication, modular construction, off-site manufacturing, digital technologies and more standardised construction processes.
For fencing and gate contractors, the findings are relevant as changes in the way residential, commercial and infrastructure projects are designed and delivered can flow through to installation methods, site coordination, technical requirements and the skills expected of contractors.
BuildSkills Australia has previously identified improved productivity as an important part of addressing Australia’s construction workforce challenge, with modern construction methods among the innovations that could help the existing workforce deliver more.
The research also reinforces the importance of ensuring vocational education and training evolves alongside changes in technology, materials and construction practices.
