New multi-storey carpark and 70 unit nurses accommodation

The Territory Government announced it will build a multi-storey carpark at Alice Springs Hospital.

It comes as the tender for construction of 70 residential accommodation units for Alice Springs Hospital staff is awarded.

The announcements are part of the NT Government’s Alice Springs Hospital Masterplan which identified the carpark as an essential piece of infrastructure for the Alice Springs community.

The old Pathology and CDC building will be demolished to free up the space for the carpark. A tender for this demolition work will be released within the coming month.

Local company, Whittaker Street Developments, was awarded the accommodation contract, which will see a new high-quality complex constructed between Todd Street and South Terrace, and will help attract and retain professional health staff in Alice Springs.

These works will support more than 240 local jobs during construction, and the facility will include:

  • 40 x 1 bedroom units, 20 x 2 bedrooms units and 10 x 3 bedroom units;
  • Off street parking;
  • Swimming pool;
  • Gymnasium;
  • Children’s playground;
  • An outdoor BBQ/eating area; and
  • Potential retail or other commercial space.

Central Australian Health Services (CAHS) will lease the units from the building owners with an initial lease period of 10-years, with an option to extend.

This facility will play a key role in the Northern Territory Government’s broader vision to revitalise Alice Springs CBD into a more vibrant and reinvigorated space for local and visitors to enjoy.

Works on the staff accommodation are anticipated to begin in 2019 and completion is expected in late 2020.
