Dwelling approvals across Australia fell by 8.8% in March 2025, with the total seasonally adjusted figure dropping to 15,220.
Private sector houses recorded a 4.5% decline (8,804 approvals), while approvals for other private dwellings such as townhouses and apartments fell by 15.1% (6,104 approvals).
The value of total residential building approvals also dropped by 7.6%, signalling a broader softening in construction activity.
This overall decline reflects ongoing challenges in the housing sector, including rising construction costs and planning delays.
