When AFL star Rhys Stanley and his wife Kirsten found a parcel of rolling acreage on Victoria’s Surf Coast, they knew it was the perfect site to build their forever home. Just 15 minutes from Torquay, the property offered the space and setting for their family of five to grow with, and grow into.
Named Farmhouse Fields, the new build is their first and was designed to reflect both the charm of a traditional farmhouse and the warmth of modern design. “We wanted it to feel well-loved and lived in from day one,” says Kirsten. To bring their vision to life, they enlisted Studio Hallihan, who seamlessly blended rustic elements with contemporary architecture.
Natural materials—timber, stone, and a warm, earthy palette, anchor the home’s aesthetic. Exposed beams, vaulted ceilings, and expansive windows harness natural light throughout the day, while limewashed walls and tactile oak flooring create a home that is both inviting and durable.
Functionality was also key. The layout includes distinct zones for parents and children, with separate bathrooms and a clever use of space to ensure calm and comfort amid the busy rhythm of farm and family life.
To support this functionality, the couple prioritised high-quality materials. “With three kids and rural life, we needed robust wall linings,” says Kirsten. The internal walls were lined with Gyprock Plus Plasterboard, chosen for its smooth finish and durability across large open areas.
Curved features throughout the home add softness and architectural interest, brought to life using Gyprock Flexible Plasterboard. “The designer had fun with curves and they’ve turned out better than we imagined,” says Rhys.
The kitchen is a centrepiece: open-plan yet subtly tucked away, with American-inspired styling, vaulted ceilings and built-in cabinetry for seamless entertaining.
In the bathrooms, moisture resistance was paramount. Gyprock Aquachek and CeminSeal® Wallboard were installed to provide lasting protection in high-moisture zones, ensuring both performance and aesthetic appeal. European brass fixtures and a marble vanity complete the refined yet natural look.
Construction began during the pandemic and, like many, the Stanleys faced delays. But two and a half years later, they are proud to call Farmhouse Fields home. “It’s been a journey—blood, sweat, and tears—but we’ve built something that will be with us for generations,” Rhys reflects.
