Biggest Matagarup Bridge arch being raised

The first component of the central arch for Matagarup Bridge – which will reach 72 metres above water level – started being lifted into place.

Two 400 tonne steel wishbone components will form the large central arch of the bridge, with the first being hoisted up on the Burswood side of the bridge over several hours.

The first wishbone was carefully transferred from the site in Burswood onto barges on the Swan River, while a temporary 50m tower that will be used to pull the arch up was constructed over several days.

International heavy lifting specialists, ALE, are managing the complex lifting procedure and have a team of expert operators and specialist equipment on site.

Once the first of two 120m by 35m wishbones is lifted into place, it will be held securely in place until the second wishbone can be raised and welded to create the complete central bridge arch.

The second wishbone is expected to be lifted in the coming weeks, subject to weather conditions and operational requirements.

The bridge deck components have started arriving to the Burswood lay-down area and will be installed during May 2018.

Meanwhile, the two smaller arches have both been erected and are in preparation for the installation of the decking.
