Bipartisan support for a First Home Loan Deposit Scheme couldn’t come at a better time for first home buyers in Sydney and across NSW, according to one of the largest home builders in the state, Metricon.
Metricon NSW general manager, Luke Fryer is in full support of the government proposal to underwrite up to 15 per cent of a first home buyer’s deposit, and help them avoid thousands of dollars in additional costs by not having to pay lenders mortgage insurance.
“This policy can’t come soon enough for first home buyers,” Mr Fryer said.
“It’s a master stroke, addressing the major challenges holding Australians back from buying their first home – specifically, the time it takes to save, affordability of what and where they want to buy, and transaction and insurance costs of purchasing property.
“Coupled with HomeSolution by Metricon which gives first home buyers access to a financial solution to help them save a deposit towards a home and land package, this policy will mean Australians have more options on what and where they can buy, and get them in their home sooner.
“While the initiative won’t commence until January 2020, first home buyers taking up our HomeSolution offer will be able to get a head start on securing land and getting it ready to build their brand new Metricon home. They will be able to lock in their home and land package any time from now and start saving their 5 per cent deposit, while they wait for the land to register. They won’t have to wait another six months to figure out what they’re able to afford.
“The fact both major parties have committed to this should give first home buyers confidence that this policy will be introduced. It’ll put opportunity back in the hands of buyers who have the proven ability to service a loan, but only have the lack of a deposit standing in the way of first home ownership,” Mr Fryer added.
